a Perfect Pie Making day...
Thursday, June 3, 2010 at 10:22PM A couple of weeks ago I packed up the fam and we drove out to the country to my aunt's house (well truthfully she is my husband's aunt but I claim her, and all of his aunts, as my own). Anne Mizen happens to be a master of good old fashion pie... the ingreadients she chooses are straight up REAL, her method is simple (and messy- my kind of baking), and the finished product will leave you craving MORE!
I walked into her farm house and she had the pastry recipe typed out for me and everything planned. She begged me to fix the spelling mistake and I said no. I figured it would allow for mistakes in my pies!
It all started with this here recipe book. I swear it dates back to biblical times... It is amazing and used and stained and that's exactly what a cookbook should be!
We then went out to Anne's garden and picked fresh rhubard for our rhubard pie!
We mixed (not too much), rolled, patted, filled, and pricked...
While Anne and I baked my man and my baby went off with uncle Tom...they foraged for wild asparagus (which we grilled for dinner- so delish) and morels, played with catepilars in the hammock, played the piano, and enjoyed the beautiful garden.
The whole day was lovely.
Pie Perfection. We made and mastered Rhubard, Apple, and Lemon Meringue Pie and Blueberry and Butter tarts. I have to say that the butter tarts were some of the best I have ever had! I must make them again to see if it was just luck or if they really are that delish!
Thank-you Anne for a most special day! I now say that I can do pie's!!

What a delightful day!
Amanda - you went to the master. You are learning and acquiring wonderful skills ! Anne makes the best pies!
Anne, when will you make me some butter tarts? In June??????
Looks like a fun day and Anne is definitely a master at pastry, so you've learned from the best! Her pies are standard at our family dinners. I would be happy for b/tarts from either of you!!
Amanda, we have never met but I've heard Mary speak of you often and your amazing venture with "cupcakes". What a beautiful day you had with Anne and I didn't know about her famous pie making. Presentation was great and could almost taste the apple pie.

Amanda...this is a lovely post, so nice to see all the pictures. I really enjoyed our day together. I made butter tarts this week at Mame's, but I don't think they were as good as the ones we made. I added raisins and walnuts this time, but I think I prefer the simplicity of ours!

There is a ginormous rhubarb plant on the land next to our house. Since my dear bf *loves* rhubarb pie, we go over every so often and harvest arm sized stalks so he can bake the deliciousness. Rhubarb pie made by my bf= happiness!
also, totally going to try the rhubarb orange butter. Sounds fantastic!
